More environmentally friendly, more natural and gentler than their liquid equivalents, natural powder products offer great prospects for the cosmetic sector. In the spirit of yesteryear, these products concentrated in healthier natural active ingredients can be available in multiple forms for cleansing or care. The water-free formulation eliminates the use of preservatives or harmful chemical additives. The revolution towards a responsible, natural and zero waste routine is underway.

From old-fashioned cosmetics to chemicals

In the past, cosmetics were made to measure and consisted of vegetable oils, fruits, plants or minerals. The expected benefits were already to cleanse, protect the skin or delay skin aging. This “cosmetic formulation” was based on a great knowledge of nature, sometimes inspired by ancient decoctions.

Since then, chemical ingredients have been added to natural ingredients. Cosmetic products with incredible promises and sometimes not very credible in the eyes of consumers have become market leaders. Although consumer expectations in this market have increased significantly, the significant use of chemical ingredients is not without consequences.

In cosmetics, under the name aqua, water is often the main ingredient of the formula, sometimes representing up to 95% of the total content. However, applying a cosmetic containing water to the skin does not hydrate it more, because the skin plays its role as a barrier. Water is mainly used as a solvent agent to solubilize ingredients.

In contact with chemical agents, water is degraded. Thus, not only does water not contain beneficial active ingredients for the skin, but the large quantities used in the manufacturing of cosmetics raise many environmental questions.

Water is a precious resource essential to life; preserving it is a major global challenge.

Today, men and women are in a new dynamic. They became aware of the scarcity of natural resources, the harmful impact of chemical ingredients such as preservatives (parabens, etc.), additives (nano particles, etc.) or odor fixatives, in short of the need to change the consumption mode to respect the planet.

A return to natural cosmetics

This new awareness creates a desire to act with a return to cosmetics and hygiene products that respect nature, namely organic or natural products.

A natural cosmetic is defined as having a composition of ingredients with a naturalness rate of at least 95% according to the ISO 16128 standard . Naturalness is calculated based on the origin of the ingredient (plant, mineral, etc.) and its extraction process. For example, the maximum score will be given to an ingredient extracted properly from a plant, that is to say by drying or grinding.

According to ISO 16128, water is considered a natural element; a shampoo made from 95% water can more easily be “natural”.

Water-free products will be more honest about their naturalness.

Natural cosmetics are available without water

As we have seen, in cosmetic products, not only does water not provide hydration but, due to the bacterial risk, it is necessary to add at least preservatives.

New water-free care products are emerging in solid format and now in powder form, in the form of innovations.

Technology today makes it possible to transform plants, flowers and vegetable oils into powders using different clean techniques (grinding, mixing, drying, atomization, etc.). Thus it is possible to recover the totality of the plant, that is to say all of its active ingredients or only a part.

The formulation of natural powders will consist of selecting the useful active ingredients from the raw materials, then through a process of transformation, mixing or heating to create a formula concentrated in active ingredients.

The powder only contains what is useful .

For natural products there is no water, preservatives or chemical additives. The water is preserved, it is never denatured either in production or in use. It is clean and ecological manufacturing.

It is possible to produce many types of powder products:

• Dry shampoos, shampoos for wet hair.
• Facial and body care, cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliants.
• Products for showering, traveling, camping...

The benefits of powder care

Natural powder products have many benefits.

They are softer

Containing at least the same active ingredients at dosages that are often higher than their liquid equivalents, powder products are at least as effective and take up little space.

Without chemical additives and preservatives, these products are often gentler because they are more natural and in fact very well suited to sensitive skin or to calm psoriasis of the scalp.

They are more suitable for hair than solid products

Unlike solid shampoos which are often greasy in texture, powdered shampoos do not make hair greasy or make it sticky. In fact they have better results on this type of washing.

They respect nature more

Water is used to a minimum, i.e. only when washing. in the formula, the water is not associated with chemical elements (paraben, MIT, fixatives, additives etc.) so not only is the water not chemically polluted but it is preserved.

Due to their composition only in biodegradable natural active ingredients, emissions during use or production are neutral. Thus, it becomes possible to wash in the river with a low impact on the environment.

They are more economical

The powders are hyper concentrated and only contain what is useful for washing or care. For example, a teaspoon of shampoo is enough to wash your hair.

1 sachet of powder of 60 ml is equivalent to 4 bottles of 250 ml of liquid shampoo.

We avoid waste, no more need to carry large liquid bottles.

They are more practical

There are several types of powders, either dry or foaming in contact with water:

• Dry powders: apply directly to hair then brush (e.g. dry shampoo).
• Foaming powders to prepare yourself (DIY: Do It Yourself): mix with water before use, sometimes requires conservation.
• No-prep foaming powders: apply directly to wet skin or hair. This is the most practical option, the powder immediately transforms into cleansing foam when used.

Their lightness and small bulk are appreciable for hiking or traveling, there is no constraint of 100 ml liquid in the airplane cabin.

The powder does not degrade:

• Over time, if protected from humidity, and in fact the duration of use is long (+36 months).
• In a hot environment, unlike solid products which must be protected.

They are more responsible

It is preferable to choose responsible packaging without impact on the environment. We will favor Kraft refills with reusable cardboard, glass or aluminum bottles. Excess packaging that is thrown away immediately after purchase should be avoided, as of course plastic bottles.

Powder products are more environmentally friendly. They are less bulky and less heavy, transporting them has less impact on the planet.

Along with powder, natural products have begun the transformation of the cosmetics sector towards a zero waste routine.
